Wildwood
Weed
Recorded by Jim Stafford
Written by Jim Stafford & Don Bowman
[C] Wildwood flower grew [Am] wild on
the farm
And we [G] never knowed what it was
called
Some said it was a flower [Am] and some
said it was a weed
[G] I didn't give it much [C] thought
One day I was out there [C7] talkin' to
my brother
And I [F] reached down for a weed to
chew [C] on
[Am] Things got fuzzy and things got
blurry
[G] And then ev'rything was gone
Didn't know what [Am] happened but I
knew it beat the [G] hell
Out of sniffing [C] burlap
[C] I come to and my [Am] brother was
there and he said,
[G]"What's wrong with your eyes?"
I said "I don't know, I was [Am] chewin'
on the weed"
He said, [G] "Let me give it a try"
[C] We spent the rest of that day and
[C7] most of that night tryin'
To [F] find my brother [C] Bill
Caught up with him about [Am] six
o'clock the next mornin'
[G] Naked, singing on the [C] windmill
He said he flew up there
[Am] I had to fly up and get him down
[G] He was about half [C] crazy
The very next day we picked a [Am]
bunch of them weeds
[G] And put 'em in the [C] sun to dry
Then we mashed 'em up and we [Am]
cleaned 'em off
Put 'em in the corncob [C] pipe
[C] Smokin' them wildwood [C7] flowers
got to be a habit
[F] We never seen no [C] harm
We thought it was kind-a [Am] handy
Take a [G] trip and never leave the [C]
farm
Big 'ole puff of that wildwood weed,
[Am] next thing you know
You're just wand'ring [G] 'round behind
the little [C] animals
[C]All good things got to [Am] come to
an end
It's the [G] same with the wildwood [C]
weeds
One day this feller from [Am]
Washington come by
[G] And spied one and turned white as a
[C] sheet
And they dug and they burned
And they [C7] burned and they dug and
they killed
All [F] our cute little [C] weeds and
then they drove away
[Am] We just smiled and waved [G]
sittin' ther on that sack [C] o' seeds
[G] "Y'all come back now, [C] y'hear!"
